The valley forms a remote and secretive passage between these two ancient cities, and has been used by armies, monks, and smugglers for thousands of years. In the lower reaches of the valley, below the monastery of St. George, there are still hermits living in isolated caves in the side of the gorge. It is among the best known and most spectacular hikes in the West Bank, but remains a wild and challenging walk.  The canyon opens out in the Jordan River Valley, and the trail arrives at the ruins of King Herod’s winter palace on the edge of Jericho.  Visit Auja Eco-Park and Jericho.

Overnight in Jerusalem.

Day 3 – Sightseeing and Cycle in Jerusalem

You will get the morning off to a roaring start with a ride through the city taking in the major sites of the modern city such as the Knesset Building, Supreme Court, the famous Mahane Yehuda Market, and the Valley of the Cross. After lunch, you will head into the Old City on foot for a guided tour of the holiest sites including the Via Dolorosa, Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Western Wall, and a view of the Dome of the Rock. After dinner you will get back on your bike for the breathtaking experience of a night ride within the walls of Jerusalem’s Old City. We will delve into the warren of alleyways making up the Old City, exploring the different quarters under the cloak of darkness.

Overnight in Jerusalem.

Day 4 – Cycle Judean hills

The Judean Hills is one of Israel’s “wine countries”, and with wide valleys, and endless vineyards, it’s easy to see why. Studded with archaeological and historical sites traversed by great biking roads, the Judean Hills sets the scene for a fantastic day of biking, exploring, and discovering, finished off with a wine tasting in a local winery.

Overnight in Mitzpe Ramon.

Day 5 – Hike in Negev

Spend the day hiking in the Negev, this dramatic desert scenery provides a striking contrast to the Judean hills. Afternoon – border crossing to Jordan and transfer to Petra.

Overnight in Petra.

Day 6 – Hike Petra

Start the day with perhaps the most well-travelled walk in Jordan, and deservedly so, the Petra Siq, the high canyon weaving it’s way to the entrance to the ancient Nabatean city of Petra, with the magnificent views of the Treasury.  Enter the city and explore the sites and tombs before returning via Wadi Muthlim, a beautiful and narrow passage, passing through a tunnel built by the Nabataeans to divert flood water from the Siq. Afternoon – transfer to Madaba.

Overnight in Madaba.

Day 7 – Cycle Jordan (Madaba to Dead Sea)

Start the cycling from the town of Madaba and discover the amazing Byzantine mosaics excavated from throughout the town. See the ‘Madaba Map’, the oldest preserved mosaic map of the Holy Lands, then to Mount Nebo and wonder at the view where Moses looked across to the Promised Land and later died and was buried, After visiting Madaba we move towards the Dead Sea, 950m – 440m below the sea level.

Overnight on the shores of the Dead Sea at one of the hotels and spas.
