The Race and Distances
The HMDS is meticulously crafted to be inclusive for individuals of all backgrounds and capabilities, ensuring accessibility for everyone to participate and achieve the coveted status of a finisher.
The HMDS route is segmented into three stages, allowing participants to progress at their preferred pace, whether walking or running. Depending on the location, there are two or three available formats: 70 km, 100 km, and 120 km.
The breakdown of each stage is as follows:
Stage 1: 25 to 30 km
Stage 2: Choice of 20 km, 40 km, or 60 km
Stage 3: 25 to 30 km
Format selection occurs during registration, but adjustments can be made until the time of the HMDS. Regardless of whether you opt for the 70 km, 100 km, or 120 km formats, the HMDS accommodates participants of all skill levels, with the sole requirement being a minimum pace of 3.5 km/h—a leisurely walking pace—allowing individuals to complete the course entirely at their own pace.
In recent years, the average rate for HMDS participants has been 5.5 km/h, representing a moderate walking speed. Notably, most HMDS participants, excluding the top 100, complete the course by walking. On average, there is a remarkable 95% finisher rate at the HMDS, with one edition achieving a 100% finisher rate.
